Fatal Blast at India's Satish Dhawan Space Centre

(23 February 2004) An explosion and fire at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR) has killed six workers and seriously injured three more. The facility is located on Sriharikota Island of the coast of Andhra Predesh, in south eastern India.

The accident happened on Monday evening whilst a test segment of solid propellant was being prepared for transportation after curing at the Solid Propellant Space Booster Plant (SPROB). The propellant caught fire and severely damaged the building being used. The plant manufactures composite solid propellant for use in rockets produced at the SHAR space centre.
